Sudan: Thousands flee fighting in Darfur

Most new arrivals are women and children
Continue to tens of thousands of people flee their homes in the Darfur region of western Sudan to the camps for the displaced in the wake of the recent fighting between government forces and armed militias.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), arrived about 66 000 displaced people to camps in North and South Darfur since January. There are at least 53,000 people in and around the Zam Zam camp for displaced people in North Darfur.
Said Bill Howard, the country director of CARE International, Switzerland that "most of the displaced people coming to the camp are women and children and the elderly, where many of the men remained in their homes to care for their livestock." He explained that "many of the newcomers have been in the open with their belongings and animals that were able to take her with them."
He added that the Bill "organizations [humanity] to intensify its activities in these areas and pool their resources to support new arrivals," adding that in addition to the immediate physical needs such as food, shelter, water, displaced people who have newly arrived to protection as well.
